Chapter 6

The Other Side

I WAS PISSED OFF. I had been working on my masterpiece for years. In one morning, he had cut it to shreds. Now, he wants to go about our day as if nothing out of the ordinary has occurred; as if he did not try to force me to choke him with a flimsy tie. Bastard!

After eating, we hopped into my vintage Beetle, and drove to the hiking area. I love my Beetle. When I need to think of a good storyline, I sit inside with the windows down and think of all the crime I can twist into a suspense.

Anthony drove talking about how my car reminded him of a serial killer. He cocked his head and asked, “Is that why you bought it? Inspiration for your novels?”

“Possibly,” I said.

We parked at the bottom of the mountain and began our hike up. More times than once, I contemplated pushing him off a cliff, but I refrained. It would have been a wasted action. I need to see his eyes. His soul. How can I write the final scene without knowing how it feels?

On the way down the mountain, he was back to normal—kissing, hugging, and joking. At times he was even reminiscent. The flowers had sparked this. The ones he had picked each morning and placed in a vase for me to awaken to.

This was our final twenty-four hours on the mountain. I wanted to make them count, forget about what had happened this morning. It was ridiculous that we had even tried something so far-fetched.

“I love you,” I said in my sweetest voice and wrapped my arms around my husband as we entered our home for the night.

He picked me up and carried me across the threshold. “I love you more.”

We went to the bedroom with the full moon peeking through our window. We showed our affections for each other and fell asleep, wrapped in each other’s arms.

The heat woke me. The sheet was drenched in sweat. I needed a cool cloth. When I threw my feet over the side and stepped onto the floor, I felt the cool blade of the knife under foot. I bent down and picked it up.

The curtains were open wide, the moon huge and orange, splashing its light across the bed. Anthony slept on his back. His chest rose and fell. His breaths quiet. I looked around. So quiet. Too peaceful.

I went to the writing desk. Opened the drawer. Took out a few sheets of paper and a pen. I intended to show him that I could finish the book. People would read it. They will love it. Tell all their friends about it. I touched my pen to the paper. Headlights splashed through the sliding doors, glinting off the knife.

I picked it up. Slipped my fingers down the cutting edge. It was as if I was shaking hands with an old friend. I kissed the cool blade. The smell of steel. I closed my eyes. Just for a second.
